Come Write With Us This Fall!

Feel the rain out there, the heat. The uncountable shades of green and the way so much green insists on a state of abundance, life in the fullest. There is nothing quite like these midsummer weeks. As Henry James said, “Summer afternoon—summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language.” And aren’t those summer evenings awfully magical, too? The image above is a summer evening on Stout’s Island during our annual Summer Solstice Retreat.
Of course, after summer comes fall, when we will have many opportunities for you to expand, deepen, or even start or re-start your writing practice. Our always popular Write for Your Life Memoir Intensive is coming up October 25-27, and it’s already halfway full! We’d love to have you join us for this perennial favorite.
We also have a number of remote classes starting in September and running through the academic year, including our most popular remote offering, The Art of the Fractured, which explores the many fragmented forms we can use to amplify and underscore meaning in our writing. And back to the topic of fractured writing, my daughter, Lillie, and I recently completed a fragmented piece we love, on the epigenetics of trauma and healing as explored through the mother-daughter bond. Our essay was selected as a finalist for the Annie Dillard Award for Creative Nonfiction. It will be published later this summer or fall. Meanwhile, my craft essay on the value of writing with constraints was published recently in Cleaver. This one goes into some detail about the literary principles and brain science behind some of Elephant Rock’s most foundational teaching practices.
